Paul Boyd-Batstone (2004) affirms that observing children’s development process can be challenging. That is the reason why teachers are required to choose the students to observe at a specific time. In reality, one cannot monitor all children in a class simultaneously. The most significant thing that can help teachers to observe students is setting a common ground in a standard-based environment for authentic assessment.
The two primary issues that might occur when observing children’s development include the strategy of composing quality records and limited time. Boyd-Batstone gives an example of a teacher is reading a story, and the students are responding appropriately. However, when the bell for a break rings, everything comes to a halt. In addition, it is challenging to observe children before a particular moment becomes lost from short-term memory. That is the reason why Boyd-Batstone suggests that one should divide the students in a class into groups (Boyd-Batstone, 2004). As such, the teacher should know the child to observe at a specific time.
