David Jonassen’s “Objectivism Versus Constructivism: Do We Need a New Philosophical Paradigm?” focuses on learning psychology and its effects on instructional systems technology (IST). The author explains that constructivists build or construct their knowledge from their daily life experiences to make sense of the social and natural world around them. On the contrary, objectivists know and are presumed to be outside learners’ abilities to find and understand knowledge (Jonassen, 1991). As such, constructivism and objectivism represent distinctive conceptions of thinking and learning, similar to the artist-scientist, two-world dialectic.
When it comes to formative assessment, it refers to informally or formally evaluating the learning process of students in their classroom to help them adapt to the teaching plans and improve their knowledge. In contrast, summative assessment entails arrangement, instruction, curriculum, and using a reasonable and reliable evaluation (Jonassen, 1991). Consequently, when I become a teacher, I will balance both summative and formative learning methods.
