Understanding the way that our minds work is essential, not only for learning but also for teaching. By knowing more about the ways that others perceive and react to our efforts, we can learn more about how we can use these to maximize their learning potential. In this article, I would like to discuss some of the things that I have learned while reading Chapter Five of Roediger et al.'s book entitled Make it Stick. This includes some techniques I believe I can use to teach American Sign Language (ASL).
Understanding Learning Processes
One of the things that I have learned in reading the chapter was the kinds of systems that we use when thinking. As cited by Roediger et al. from Kahneman's book entitled Thinking, Fast and Slow, humans have two systems of thinking, namely, System 1 and System 2. Notably, while System 1 looks at our unconscious, intuitive, and immediate response to the stimulus around us, System 2 focuses on our conscious analysis and reasoning processes. I believe that both of these systems would be essential in teaching ASL.
On the one hand, System 1 refers to our "unconscious, intuitive, and immediate" way of thinking that draws from our past experiences, senses, and memories, among others. These are our systems and responses that are immediate yet powerful since it is based on our own accumulated experiences. In other words, although this would require a lengthy learning process, such learnings and experiences could help us apply them quickly in any situation.
