The purpose of this essay is to discuss lifelong learning and leadership in the army. Learning and leadership are necessary ingredients for one to succeed in an army. The nature of the work in the military is quite unpredictable and dynamic; an army officer should be alert at all times because a potential crisis may always hoover around. The military involves the inculcation of self-awareness, lifelong learning, flexibility, and adaptability. There are compelling reasons that demand a military person to learn and develop bold leadership capacity. Many agree that the unity of the army, numerical strength, superior technology, all these aspects are products of effective learning, training, and leadership.
Leadership and lifelong learning constitute the backbone of career advancement. Any army officer who is ambitious in progressive personal growth in th sphere of the military should prioritize leadership training. The military ranking represents an outcome of rigorous learning or training and sound leadership. The need for training in these aspects underpins the responsibilities that accompany such ranks. Each rank has a unique set of training units that espouses particular roles. Traditionally, many are of the school of thought that the persons who join the army do so due to the relativity of high job security and depart from work upon retirement (Nataraj & Hanser, 2018). However, Nataraj & Hanser further observe that others pursue a different career trajectory that involves spending a few years in the army, and this is followed by a move to other Department of Defense systems. These divergent career pathways present a need to tailor training to individuals’ career aspirations and interests.
The current wave of globalization is a reflection of what is happening in the military. The military is already aligning its methodologies, learning, training, and leadership in light of the global perspectives. Li et al. (2017) argue that the existing military working environment is ‘boundaryless.’ Li and his colleagues opine that the military needs to adopt a professional life that provides solutions to current global challenges. Already many feel that military training need to be a universal, quality, and standardized process. The military training that is in tandem with global requirements is effective and beneficial to both the individual army officer and the state. Countries spend millions of dollars in the acquisition of state of the art military equipment; the cost of military weaponry represents a significant burden to taxpayers in any nation. The military should always have adequate preparedness in terms of machinery use and tactical approaches; this is achievable through rigorous training done through diverse strategies such as stimulations.
