An IEP meeting is a meeting where parents, educators, and other eligible stakeholders come together to discuss, develop, and review a student's IEP. The rules of the meetings cover mandatory stakeholders and the agenda (Mueller et al., 2019). Based on Steven's IEP report, the required stakeholders include the student, his parent or guardian, his educator, and a school psychologist. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) students aged fourteen or older are required to participate in IEA meetings (Shriner & Ganguly, 2017). Steven is of the required age and he should not be excluded from attending if he is comfortable. The student's role in the meeting is to voice his opinions regarding special education services and transition goals.
The role of parents or guardians in the meeting is to advocate for a student’s best interest, ensuring the student has the necessary resources to succeed in school. Besides, they communicate the challenges their child faces inside and outside of the classroom to the rest of the IEP team. The teacher’s role is to provide information about the student's academic performance and advise on special education services for the individual (Mueller et al., 2019). The educator also gives insight into Steven's daily behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses. The school psychologist assesses the student’s mental health and links it to his specific learning disability.
