Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a disorder that affects coordination and movement and can limits the student’s ability to learn to a great extent. According to Pereira et al. (2019), children with CP tend to show poor engagement in school and the motor limitation associated with the condition limits their ability to participate in activities and follow a routine. In this sense, the conditions associated with CP that may influence educational programming include movement and walking disabilities, cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, speech difficulties, and vision or hearing loss (Jansheski, 2022). Based on the above conditions, key educational considerations include modification of the school environment, promotion of inclusive practices, development of an individualized educational program (IEP), use of supportive technologies, and collaborating with parents and allied health practitioners.
A modification of the school environment is a necessary consideration for a student with CP. Given that CP limits posture and movements, it is necessary to consider adjusting the environment in terms of seating arrangement, sloping boards, and accessibility for wheelchairs (NCCD, n.d.). It is important that the modifications to the learning environment be informed by a specialist staff like speech pathologist or physiotherapist. The teacher can also pair the student with CP with others that are outgoing to promote engagement.
The promotion of inclusive practices in the classroom and school is also instrumental in supporting students with CP. With CP students experiencing cognitive and physical limitations, it is important for the teacher to know what they are feeling and thinking to foster the creation of an inclusive learning environment, where they feel understood (NCCD, n.d.).
