The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act has had a positive impact on English learners. For instance, it allows families to be involved in ELL language development. Families are informed about the student’s progress as well as the kind of support they will receive and communication is done in a language that the parents understand (Robertson, n.d.). Also, it allows ELL learners to remain in class when core instruction in reading, science, and math are being given. This ensures that ELLs are “offered identical learning opportunities as all students” as per the civil rights and department of education guidance (Gottlieb, 2016). Thus, ELLs are given equitable treatment in the classroom. The law also requires states to develop assessments that are then used to “acquire additional materials to support student learning (Leos & Saavedra, n.d.).” This has greatly improved ELLs learning outcomes.
However, NCLB has some negative aspects that have worked against ELLs. For instance, NCLB focuses so much on testing of ELLs.
