The internet is a blessing and a curse to the world, considering the benefits and drawbacks that it attracts to its users. With more people, including children joining social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook for their entertainment, the challenges of using the internet have escalated just as much as the benefits. Online harassment and cyberbullying are some of the challenges linked to the use of internet platforms. Individuals with ulterior motives can visibly and anonymously employ the internet to portray unpopular messages. In a learning setting, it is common to encounter a student who has been subjected to cyberbullying. A student who notifies a teacher of incidences of cyberbullying should be subjected to the legal and moral principles that guide participation in school activities from the constitution, state statutes, district school board policies, faculty handbook, and the student handbook.
There are specific steps that a responsible person should take to address a case of cyberbullying within a learning institution. Every responsible adult is equipped with legal and moral information that should guide his/her courses of action while faced with such a scenario (Giumetti & Kowalski, 2019). The first step to take is to investigate the issue. If one student complains that he/she has been bullied on Facebook, it is upon the responsible adult to ascertain the truthfulness of the claims. The adult may interrogate the complainant to ascertain the source of the issues (Marzano & Lizut, 2019). The responsible adult should also invite the accused student to explain his/her understanding relevant to the accusations.
The issue can be forwarded to the school principal after the facts of the case are outlined. All the primary guiding policies, such as the school board policies, faculty handbook, and the student handbook, reiterate the need to seek the guidance of the principal on issues such as cyberbullying (Green, 2016).
