The Common Core curriculum standards result from three decades of publicly imposed centralized curriculum, shifting power away from parents and community educators and toward states and the federal government. Major publishing companies have invested considerably in adapting current textbooks and educational resources to national guidelines and producing new materials from scratch in the years after the CCSS were adopted (Blazar et al., 2020). New York State spent more than $35 million to create Engage NY, a curriculum resource package that is now extensively used in Charles Country Curriculum (Blazar et al., 2020). Switching from one book to another has a relatively low cost for education systems when school books are developed. The majority of textbook editions and curricula materials currently in use have never been put through a thorough efficacy evaluation. Furthermore, no research has looked at the responsiveness of book effects throughout time or between states. Logic says that an elevated curriculum or book should be beneficial across locations, especially if the contents are developed to conform to a shared or similar set of criteria (Blazar et al., 2020).

High-performing states' math standards were closely connected with Common Core math requirements.
