While some of the arguments and views presented by Freeman and Freeman (2006) are similar to my classroom experience, some differ significantly. In their texts, the authors express outright support for bilingual education in helping English language learners improve their performance on English standardized tests. The authors quote numerous studies that show the effectiveness of bilingual programs. According to the authors “…the use of the native language for instruction resulted in increased academic achievement for English language learners” (p.10). This differs significantly from my classroom experience. The extent of bilingual education to support ELL students is limited.
