Assessment Practices in Teaching Profession
An effective assessment system benefits both the teachers and the students since it shows the efficiency of the teaching practices. The assessment can be a source of motivation for students. For example, poor performance may indicate the need to work harder in their studies. For teachers, the test results indicate the effectiveness of their instructional strategies in helping the students meet the intended learning objectives. Other stakeholders including parents, school’s board of directors, and policy makers also find the assessment results useful. An effective assessment system should consider all the involved stakeholders. Different parties use the information for specific purpose.
The grade level and content area are essential aspects in assessment. Students in different levels have varying assessment needs. The techniques used to in assessing lower grade students include oral tests to determine their reading ability. This is not the case for higher grade pupils. For efficiency, different content areas should have a unique grading system. Subjects such as mathematics and sciences should be graded differently from others such as English. The technical aspects of the content areas differ and this should reflect in the assessment system.
The grading scale is essential in assessment as it communicates the level of understanding for students. A wide grading scale is better than a short one as it distributes the marks accordingly. The highest grade in the scale should be an A, ranging from 90-100% for A+ and 80-89 for an A. Grade B+ should range from points 70-79% and B should be between 60-69%. Students who score between 50 and 59% should earn a C+ while a C should be range from 40-49%. Any grade below 40% should be a D. For better interpretation of the grading system, each of the scores should represent a GPA points. Students with the highest score should earn 6 points while the lowest should earn a zero.
Different types of assessments are essential since each of them is uniquely beneficial to the stakeholders. The summative and formative are the major types that one can implement in their system. Summative tests focus on revealing the extent to which the learners meet the expected outcomes (Bennett, 2010). The test it conducted at the end of a learning period and it indicates the students’ readiness to proceed to the next grade. Formative tests are conducted in the course of the learning period. They indicate the student’s development and the efficiency of instructional strategies in teaching.
