Diagnostic Case Scenario
I will use three assessments to assess how best to assist Scott: the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, the Conners 3RD Edition, and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT) assesses students' reading, listening, speaking, and mathematics competencies and skills. The WIAT was published in 1992 and is helpful in several settings, such as schools to assess students' educational progress. The WIAT is employed to assess age-based standard scores, percentile ranks, and grade equivalents. It consists of 16 subsets that assess math fluency, oral reading, and early reading skills. It can be used for students from ages 4 up to 50 and students from kindergarten to grade 12 (Beaujean & Parkin, 2022). It is also used to establish the strengths and weaknesses of a student in academics.
The WIAT is suitable for this case study as it seeks to inform decisions regarding educational placement. The parent describes the various school institutions Scott has attended in the past, with him displaying disruptive and aggressive behavior. A normal student should spend time in school without demonstrating excessive disruptive behavior, but, Scott's studies at a structured preschool had to be shortened to two hours as he refused to participate in activities like coloring, writing, and drawing. Therefore, WIAT will be helpful in designing a plan intervention or instructional objective suitable for Scott.
The Conners 3rd Edition is an assessment tool that measures the behavior of children between 6 to 18 years old. The types of scores yielded with Conner 3rd Edition include manual scoring, standardized, and index scores. It was published in 2008 and is a recommended assessment for students struggling with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), such as Scott. Although it is not mentioned Scott has ADHD, he has symptoms of the condition that include impulsiveness, low frustration tolerance, restlessness, and problems focusing on a task. Health professionals use Conners 3rd Edition to determine a diagnosis of ADHD using DSM-5 symptom criteria. ADHD is characterized by impulsivity that impairs function in social, home and school settings (Sampaio et al., 2022). Conners 3rd Edition can be used to assess different skills such as learning problems, impulsivity, executive functioning, defiance, and peer /Family relations. The case study mentions that when Scott is frustrated, he makes a high–pitched shriek that can be done 8-10 times in an hour – a behavior that showcases his impulsiveness. Accordingly, Conners 3rd Edition is suitable to Sco...
