In the introduction section of Sara K Ahmed’s book, Being the Change, social comprehension is defined as “how we make meaning from and mediate our relationship with the world” (p. xxv). As I went through the work, I learned that as an educator, I have the potential to initiate change by offering support to learners and help expound their mindset to understand the world they live in. In this work, Ahmed (2018) explains that stirred stereotypes generated by the media, political rhetoric as, well as tragic events, are likely to affect learners’ emotions. These behaviors, which are perpetuated by adult citizens in our community instill fear to the students, thus affecting their identity, compassion, and relationship with others.
I have never conceptualized social comprehension as a key element of professional teaching. However, after reading the introduction and the first chapter of the book, the detailed ideas expanded my mind and knowledge. The concepts presented in this masterpiece are not only new to my career, but are also an eye-opener that will help me revisit my notions about students' inner picture and my relationship with them. The author delves deeper and explains that transparency is vital when it comes to social comprehension. I agree with the author that transparency helps us as educators shape our thinking and also visualize the real world of learning. Healthy and open discourse in a class setup can help relieve tension among the learners, thus unraveling many puzzles that may create stumbling blocks in their school lives.
