Public schools should adopt a dress code, and require students to adhere to that dress code or be denied enrollment. The school dress code law was established in 1969 by the United States Supreme Court (Mitchell, 1998). As clothing is a primary means for expressing ideas for students, several students were involved in a case of Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent school District where students expressed themselves by wearing black armbands to school in protest that was planned to protest against the Vietnam War. The Court saw this case, and reached to a decision that schools may limit the way students were expressing themselves. The dress code was enforced because such expressions may disrupt the learning environment or even violate the rights of others (Mitchell, 1998).
Public schools should adopt a proper dress code for students because students’ appearances significantly affect the way others portray or respond to them. It is the duty of public schools to provide an educational environment that is conducive to learning, and minimize distractions. Public schools must protect the safety, morals, and health of the students, and for that reason, all students in the public schools must abide by the dress code outlined by the board of the school. It is also the responsibility of the community to consider, and maintain the conducive atmosphere for teaching, and learning of students (Firmin, Smith, & Perry, 2006).
A public school maybe denied enrollment of students if it does not adopt a proper dress code, and ensure students adhere to that dress code.
