Modern trends in training and education indicate future needs will far outdo the supply of nurses, therapists, community workers, nurses, and pharmacists trained in geriatrics. The deficits in geriatrics training can be attributed to a scarcity of faculty in universities and medical colleges who are skilled in geriatrics. According to Sedhom and Barile (2017), only 600 medical school departments out of 100,000 offer geriatrics as the significant specialty. Because of this and other reasons, just 3 percent of medical trainees choose an elective geriatric course. Moreover, most of the educational curricula in other fields such as pharmacy, nursing, and dentistry do not require geriatric training. There are various reasons why there is a need to train more physicians nationally in which specialize in geriatrics and palliative care. According to Sedhom and Barile (2017), the demand for geriatrics and palliative care is on the rise because of the American population is living longer, with most demanding to handle several chronic diseases such as hypertension, heart diseases, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and others. They further emphasize that public health, as well as epidemiologic data, predict that persons in America will age, with a reducing number participating in the workforce or the role of caregiving.
Presently, an insufficient number of geriatricians put a demand for specialized care to be given by internists who inadequate specialized training in providing care to older patients. Though some medical schools offer training in geriatrics and palliative care, the number in almost universally insufficient. According to Bernacki and Billings (as cited in Sedhom & Barile, 2017), only 25 percent of U.S medicine residences need geriatric rotations.
