Through the two previous assignments, you have developed strong foundational skills for either a) producing a podcast (7-8 minutes) or b) drafting a blog. For your final project, you will select an agency, organization, or leader that you would like to profile as action-oriented or policy-oriented problem-solvers. You may either produce a podcast on the role of the agency in tackling that problem, a blog/OpEd highlighting their work, or an “action toolkit” that guides leaders and/or members of a public on how to take steps to address the problem at hand. We will provide greater specificity on the required components of that work through a specific “handout” posted in the NYU Classes site.
Just as with the first two assignments, your final assignment has many of the same components - we risk being repetitive, but we want to be clear: Your final written or recorded assignment should include a compelling "hook" as a way to introduce the topic or question - the interviewer then carefully defines key terms that are central to understanding that issue; the interviewer provides the audience with some compelling evidence to support the interviewer's position on that issue, then the interviewer lifts up the perspective of an interviewee through a great set of interview questions and conversation. Finally, the interviewer gives the audience a clear set of action steps or guidance on how to move forward, and then ends the podcast with a strong wrap-up.
We are really excited about this final assignment as a way for you to showcase your fluency in the deploying terms and constructs we've covered in this class, your critical analysis of the issue you cover, your ability to share your and others' perspectives and insights, and your ability to synthesize evidence and translate that evidence into recommended action steps. We hope that this assignment leads to stellar quality work that you might want to include in a portfolio when applying to internships, jobs, or graduate programs. We are also interested in exploring your interest in holding a "peer reviewed" competition - students could nominate their final assignments for consideration for NYU's Cross-Cutting Initiative on Inequality website, with classmates volunteering to vote for best podcast and blog entries. Many people feel ill-equipped to fight against racial inequality even as recent acts of anti-Asian racism, violence, and hatred continue to increase. Racist characterizations of the global epidemic has ignited xenophobic rhetoric against Asians and resulted in numerous anti-Asian hate incidents CITATION Liu21 \l 1033 (Liu, 2021). In light of recent hate crimes and bias against Chinese Americans, this paper proposes an action toolkit that will guide members of the public on how to take steps to address these cases of discrimination. The toolkit entails five sections including: examining oneself for implicit biases against Asian Americans; creating safe spaces for dialogues on racial inequality; increasing awareness of the history of discrimination against Asian Americans; identifying racist behaviors and policies and committing to fighting them; over and above standing up with the Asian American community in the fight against racial injustices. The objective of this toolkit is to promote dialogue within society about the ongoing discrimination against Asian American and unite members of the public against racial inequality.
The first section in this toolkit is aimed at helping members of the public become aware of their implicit bias against Asian Americans and identify ways in which this racial bias provides a foundation for possible racially motivated injustices. Starting with oneself is a critical step towards eliminating all inherent beliefs or attitudes that often drive an individual’s decision making when interacting with members of other races. A person’s subconscious perceptions of Asian Americans, which developed from prior imprints and influences, must be uncovered and evaluated in order to effectively fight against racism. After uncovering these biases, members of the public must understand how the preconceptions impact their interactions with the Asian community. The procedure of uncovering any subconscious racial biases begins by acknowledging that one’s racial identity often affects how they perceive others CITATION Nor17 \l 1033 (Nordell, 2017). Because this process is often accompanied by feelings of guilt, sadness, and shame, it is important to accept one’s biases with compassion. Self-compassion is instrumental to moving beyond these negative feelings and developing mindfulness in our interactions with other people regardless of their skin color. It allows us to heal and even support endeavors aimed at promoting racial equality.
The second section in the toolkit involves promoting honest and meaningful discussions about stopping Asian hate. Conversations revolving around race are often uncomfortable and this step is meant to help members of the community navigate the awkwardness and disquiet involved CITATION Goo20 \l 1033 (Goodman, 2020). Rather than avoid difficult conversations and ignore the existing race problem, this toolkit advises the creation of safe spaces where members of the public can talk, listen, and learn about the history and struggles of Asian Americans.
