Shifts in Asian Family Structures
Introduction
In the traditionally Asian culture, people would expect women take more responsibility for housework. However, this situation has a little bit change right now. In ChillaBulbeck’s work, she describes that in modern society, women participate more in the social work than before. Moreover, women who have equal pay-work time with men, but also bear most housework at home. Her research also tells us, of more female support than male about sharing housework.
In Asia area, especially in India, there are two approaches of getting engaged. First occurs when two people are attracted to each other, while the other way is when a relationship is imposed by parents. Women and men both have different expectations about the marriage. Women want to get some financial support from the men. Things have changed slightly between generations. For example, people who are born in India nowadays opt to get married to individuals from different races, thus they allow other cultures to get into their families. In as much as the studies detailed support the aspect that there are shifts in the Asian family structures, evidence negates this idea by attributing these changes only to the developed nations, an aspect that creates a gap in the findings of this study.
Shifts in Asian Family Structures
This study seeks to conduct an analysis of the findings from a qualitative survey carried out on 544 unmarried and married men and women including their parents from the traditional Indian society in a bid to establish the changes in family structures and their implications to social institutions. The research, therefore, seeks to link the aspect of changes in mate selection to the changing times in the society, an element that is useful in establishing the emergence of particular preferences within the marriage setting, a point that has positive implication in limiting the growing rates of divorce in the society.
The primary journals used in this analysis depict a qualitative research approach with limitations noted in this study since its development is only confined to the urban areas, thus restricting other studies from exploring the extent to which these changes in family structures also affect individuals in the rural areas. The design of this study critically addresses the thesis since it provides empirical evidence to prove the manner in which the changes in the society support the shifts that are witnessed in family structures.
