Preparation for Intended Major
I developed an interest in dentistry from a young age due to my fascination with teeth and their inner workings. As a result, I developed a curiosity for the sciences, eventually becoming my favorite subject. Throughout my education, I have worked extremely hard to ensure that I can achieve my lifelong dream of becoming a dentist and helping people achieve smiles through my work. Despite constant challenges that I faced growing up and all through my adult life, I completed high school and college to ensure that I could gain admission to the university to pursue this course. Consequently, I completed all the pre-requisites necessary for my major, including general biology, physics with labs, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. As a result, I have the general academic ability to pursue my intended major in the university based on my comprehension of a myriad of scientific information and perception of knowledge in the field. Additionally, being a non-native English speaker, I have developed my language skills to ensure that I can understand and comprehend concepts required in the major and interaction skills that will aid in gaining more information from my peers and members of the faculty.
Apart from that, I am a member of the UCSD Dental Society, which promotes the interests of students wishing to pursue a career in dentistry. Society has empowered me by offering practical experiences and knowledge essential for dental school. For instance, I have had the opportunity to shadow and observe professionals undertaking their daily activities to get a better glimpse of life as dentists. Further, I am also pursuing a certificate in tooth waxing and X-ray that will build up my knowledge as I join the university. I am also a Red Cross volunteer at the Naval Hospital working as a phlebotomist that further offers an opportunity to work in a busy medical environment. I believe that such enrichment at the UCSD Society and Naval Hospital will further increase my knowledge and be critical in helping me succeed in my upper-division courses at the university.
Overcoming Educational Barriers
My parents never had the chance to go to school and get an education since they grew up in Afghanistan during a time of war. Consequently, they did not appreciate the value of education and its ability to change the life of individuals. However, from the onset, I dreamed of gaining knowledge by attending school and completing my education to have a career in the future. Being from Afghanistan, young girls and women face challenges, especially in aspects of freedom, including access to education. More so, with my parents fleeing the country looking for a haven while escaping the Taliban, my quest for education was significantly interrupted. However, this did not deter me from working hard to get the required grades and continue my education.
Coming to America offered a fresh perspective and a window of opportunity for me to continue my educational journey. My mindset from this stage changed completed, and I decided that I would continue to work towards my dream of going to university to pursue a dental course. ...
