"Non-Institutional" Responses to Food Waste
Mercer and Edwards term "non-institutional" responses to food waste to ensure that people get access to food through ways such as dumpster diving, Food Not Bombs chapters, and unauthorized gleaning (Edwards & Mercer, 2012). Dumpster diving's strengths are that it is easily coordinated and helps divert food from the waste stream to those that most need it. The major limitation is that it can result in injury or even death for the participants. It can also result in disorganization due to the significant mess in the vicinity of the dumpster. According to Pennlive.com, two men were arrested for dumpster-diving outside a CVS store in Hershey and were charged with defiant trespassing and loitering (Peter, 2016). The Food Not Bombs chapter's strength is that it prompts people to feel the need to ensure that food is not wasted and that people can get access to food promptly. The other strength of the Food Not Bombs chapter is that it grants anyone an opportunity to participate in solving the food crisis issue (Vaughan, 2018). The major limitation of the Food Not Bombs chapters is that there is no guarantee that people will get access to food globally, despite it being a popular movement.
Additionally, the major strength of unauthorized gleaning is that it helps solve the issue of food insecurity in a nation in a cost-effective method. However, it comes with various limitations.
