Criteria for Selection of Winners
1. The Korea America Friendship Society (KAFS) is a non-political, non-government fraternal organization established for the purpose of promoting better understanding and harmonious Korean-American relations. In pursuit of these goals, KAFS established the Friendship Award to recognize exceptional individual contributions to the promotion of friendship and goodwill. For 2020, the Korea America Friendship Society (KAFS) will present Friendship Awards to five outstanding USFK members during its June Festival and Friendship Night at the Seoul Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on 18JUN20.
2. 2-1 ABCT will select one outstanding U.S Soldier to represent the brigade as a nominee for the 2020 KAFS Friendship Award. The final selection of the awardee must be approved by the Chief of Staff or Deputy Commander, 8A.
3. Eligibility: Awardee must have been actively involved in one or more activities/programs that have significantly contributed to improving Korean-American relations. Qualifying activities include, but are not limited to, community service, humanitarian work, and/or participation in local Korean-American partnership programs. Community service includes participation in mentorship programs (e.g., teaching English and/or other subjects, coaching sports, serving as “Big Brother/Big Sister,” etc.), ecological preservation programs, and other socio-civic programs to enhance Korean quality of life. Humanitarian service includes assistance during emergencies and disasters. Above activities could have been performed during on or off-duty hours. Assistance to orphans is important but should not be the sole basis for nomination. Personnel whose primary job responsibilities include community relations or Good Neighbor Program coordinator or similar roles are not eligible for the award. A sample justification is provided.
4. The KAFS Friendship Award consists of a certificate and medallion. Many prominent Koreans and senior USFK officials will join KAFS in honoring award recipients at the June Festival and Friendship Awards Night dinner. Awardees must be available to attend the event in Seoul on the evening of 18JUN20.
SAMPLE

CPT E, Commander of a Combat Support Company, led the effort to forge a Korean American Friendship Council relationship with the local residents and officials of the village of -- Ri. CPT E emphasized to the leaders and soldiers the importance of Korean holidays as an opportunity to construct positive bonds with its neighbors. Displaying sensitivity and cultural awareness, CPT E reached out to the village and constructed a powerful relationship built upon friendship and mutual respect. In the fall, CPT E and his unit reinforced the bond with -- Ri by assisting the local harvest efforts. CPT E's unit and Service Members hosted the nearby orphans for Thanksgiving and other holidays. His officers volunteered to teach conversational English every Tuesday and Thursday at the community library. When snow and ice covered the --Trail Nature Park, CPT E and his soldiers cleaned the trail and restored it to usefulness. CPT E’s initiative, understanding and excellent representation of the unit and the United States Army greatly improved the relations between the soldiers and the Korean people around Camp**.
