Discussion Thread: Case Study: Improving the User Experience in Healthcare Informatics
A tertiary care center in the western United States has an installed base of electronic health records (EHRs) supported by Cerner Corporation for inpatient areas and by Epic for outpatient areas. Other technology includes a suite of about 300 different applications supported by the IT department. The current environment, while including robust capabilities such as computerized provider order entry, is “siloed” with information. Healthcare providers complain that they have difficulty obtaining the “big picture” of the patient across systems and they have to remember information located in disparate systems. They are burdened with integrating information themselves. Not only is this time consuming; it is potentially prone to error. Providers have developed numerous workarounds to the different systems in ambulatory and inpatient areas, including “shadow” files for patients they see frequently. Nurses complain that they have to “jump around” the inpatient system to find information they need for activities such as patient handoffs.
The organization responds by developing a vision for the future that is centered on the concept of knowledge management (KM). This concept is defined as the systematic process of identifying, capturing, and transferring information and knowledge that people can use to create, compete (with other organizations), and improve. A crucial aspect of KM is improving the user experience. As the leaders in the organization begin to address KM and improve the user experience, they are employing the same tactics described in the Learn section.

Improving the User Experience in Healthcare Informatics
According to Holmes (2019), it is essential to incorporate usability requirements when planning to purchase and implement a given system. Through this, cases of system failure are prevented as well as productivity increases. As the leader of the user experience (UX), the first area I would improve is ensuring the integration of all vital information about a patient from different systems. One of the major issues that the staffs are facing is having to integrate the information about patients themselves, which is time-consuming, prone to error, and tiresome. Thus, I would make sure that a new system is implemented that provides all the necessary information to the healthcare provider for more accuracy and a better experience when using the system. The other thing I would aim to improve is ensuring that the cases of computerized provider order entry being “siloed” with information are eliminated. As the leader in user experience, I will ensure that all authorized individuals can access a patient’s information on time and easily, and this will greatly improve their experience when using the system.
One of the methods that I would incorporate in examining the fact that the pharmacists supporting the ICUs are forced to use non-integrated systems is examining the cons and pros of introducing a new system. When the pharmacist has to search for different information on a patient from different systems, the chances of errors occurring are rampant. Thus, to improve their user experience, I will ensure that there is a system that is easy to use and one that integrates patient information to help the pharmacist offer better services to patients.
Furthermore, since the company is in the process of purchasing a new physiologic monitor for its step-down unit, usability is one of the...
