Serving in the military requires self-sacrifice as the officers undergo thorough training and are separated from their family and friends. Different people have varying opinions about joining the military. Although it is voluntary in most countries, some countries still enforce conscription. Those who volunteer are inspired by personal reasons such as pursuing jobs, improving their lives, and following their parents' footsteps (Diaz, 2021). Although tough, life in the military is not all gloomy. We can draw many lessons from a military career in everyday life.
My father enlisted in the military in his mid-20s and has served for more than twenty years. Whenever he came home, we loved being around him because he was full of life, and we loved his storytelling skills. As we grew up, we realized that some of those stories were from his own experience in the military. The common thing about his tales is that they all had a moral lesson at the end. He taught us that every good or bad experience had its lessons.
Being in the military, my father taught me the importance of valuing family and close friends by spending quality time with them. He would tell us how he lost friends and colleagues during missions. Anything could happen to anyone at any time on the battlefield. He did not take life for granted and checked on us as often as he could. He also taught us to check on each other, bringing us closer as a family.
