Canto 5 in Dante’s Inferno remembers the agonizing event of the Second Circle of Hell. In the Second Circle there is the monster Minos who stands in front of a long and seemly endless line of sinners and allocates them their torments. Each sinner must confess his/her sins to Minos. Once a sinner confesses, Minos wraps his tail around his body a certain number of times as an indication of the number of the circle the sinner’s soul must go. Minos immediately recognizes that Dante is a living soul and warns him against entering the Second Circle. However, Virgil tells Minos that he was sent to lead Dante and so he allows them to pass.
Once they enter, Dante and Virgil have to go through a dark place with heavy down pour, and strong winds that tears through the air. The souls residing in this circle swirl around the wind and are swept helplessly into the wild air. The souls in the dark place are those with s...
