In researching this paper, you are expected to go beyond the texts and readings provided in your course materials, and to make use of supplementary materials (books and articles) in the Athabasca University Library or in any other college or university library to which you have access.
This essay should be approximately 2,000 words in length, and should include notes and a bibliography.
Essay Topic
Choose a major genre of popular culture discussed in the course: science fiction, hip hop music, comic film, superhero comic, or dramatic television. Compare and analyze three important works created in the genre you have chosen, including one that typifies the genre and with which the genre is closely identified.
Alternatively, you may choose to examine three works in the same medium and consider what that medium typifies (print, video, audio, etc.). Examine how the three works conform to and depart from the conventions of the genre or medium, and evaluate their successes, failures, and overall achievements. Indicate which of the three works you prefer, and explain in detail the reasons for your choice. If you use V for Vendetta or Night of the Living Dead, you may opt to compare it in more detail to only one other work in the same genre.

CITATION Kus03 \l 1033 (Kustritz, 2003) This essay is an analysis of three popular horror films, Night of the Living Dead, World War Z and The Green Berets. The evaluation will involve reviewing the time the films were released and if the social environment had an impact on the films. It will also serve as a reflection of how the genre has changed over the years and if today’s films still have the years and fictional characters that are typical of science fiction.
Night of the Living DeadThis is George Romero’s first film co-written with John Russo. It was produced in 1968 as a black and white film that made its overall budget a mere $114,000 compared to what blockbuster movies are spending on their production right now. It was hugely successful grossing over $30 million and inspired an entire genre of horror films. John Russo had written the script of the film as comic horror which involved extensive research on the fictional world of zombies and relation with issues in the society such as politics. The film has been remade two times, in 1978, Dawn of the Dead and also in 2004, with both films doing extremely well in box office sales.
Following the assassinations of Malcolm X (1965) and Martin Luther King, Jr. (1968), it proved to be a dark time for the United States of America. Riots and civil movements had been going on since 1960 across major cities such as Atlanta, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Seattle, and Cleveland. The film was created to respond and showcase this period in American history and given that most of the authors were from this period, we get a clear portrayal of the resistance, parties and civil rights movement. Also, America was being faced with the Vietnam war and Americans were significantly anxious. That is why the release of this film was seen as a bridge between entertainment and voicing political issues in Hollywood.
The zombies are meant to represent America’s worst fears due to their physical appearance and how they inspire fear. That is why the writers used them as a form of political commentary and as a metaphor for racial sublimation, communism, mass contagion, and globalism. CITATION Zac16 \l 1033 ...
