In the two articles by Brosius and Kiik , we turn our gaze away from Indigenous communities to examine conservationists and environmental organizations through the lens of Anthropology. For this essay, there are two parts. First, using the Brosius chapter, discuss the various ways in which Anthropologists and Conservation Biologists engage with each other including discussions of the tensions and potential successes of engagement between the two. Second, using the Kiik article and citing specific examples from the article, discuss how the study of ‘conservationland’ informs our understanding of the diversity of conservation organizations and practices, including their strengths and weaknesses in relation to their place in the larger arena of global conservation work.

There has been a significant shift in scholarships across various disciplines. Anthropologists are keen to track sources of knowledge and members of the society who are empowered. The understanding will help in assessing the authoritative figures and identifying the interplay of power, history, and culture in the conservation of the environment. On the other hand, conservation biologists also recognize the influence of political matters in the preservation of the environment but from a different perspective. The perspective is based on the relationships between donors and organizations, governments and firms, among others. The interaction of anthropology and conservation biology leads to tensions and success. Urgency is among the key areas leading to tension between the two groups. Anthropologists take time to assess the information; conservation biologists have a heightened sense of urgency. Besides, conservation biologists may see anthropologists as hurdles when they act as spokespersons for the society. However, there is a tremendous success when the two groups work together. The two fields should complement each other to offer the knowledge needed (for anthropology) and tools (conservation biology) to tackle persistent challenges in environmental conservancy (Brosius, 2018).
