Writing or speaking effectively to convey a message and persuade others is a form of art that has been around for centuries. To better understand what this means, it is important to explore rhetoric, both ancient and modern.
Rhetoric
Rhetoric is one of the few ancient arts of communication that allowed people to hold dialogue and debate on various topics. It was very instrumental in influencing politics at the time (Changing Minds, n.d.). The art of rhetoric has been developed and in modern times, it used to influence many fields, including politics and business. However, while traditional rhetoric focused on the writer or speaker, modern rhetoric focuses on the audience (Perlman, n.d.). Modern rhetoric also includes other forms of non-print forms of communication, such as images and videos.
So, what is rhetoric? Rhetoric is the art of persuading others to make them understand why something is important. Rhetoric is about influence. It is not about getting answers to questions.
