CCT110: Rhetoric and Media. Winter 2019. Assignment #1 Assignment #1: Research Question and Annotated Bibliography Due: Thursday, January 24 (9am). Assignments submitted after 9am will be considered late (please review the course late policy below for penalties). Method of submission: Online via Turnitin and Quercus. You may also be asked to submit a hard copy to your TA at the start of your tutorial. Check with your TA. Assignment Size: 750 – 1000 words. General Notes: This individual assignment is worth 10% of your final mark and is the first of a three-part assignment (see (Revised)Research Question and Thesis Statement and Essay Outline and Introduction). For this assignment, you will submit a research question and an annotated bibliography with a minimum of six (6) sources. Assignment Description: Choose a topic (see Appendix) that you wish you explore. You will conduct research and develop a potential research question. While you are encouraged to use the same topic that you worked on for writing Assignment #4 in CCT109 this past fall, you can choose a different topic from the Topic Options (from CCT109) listed in the Appendix below. Keep in mind that you must pick one topic to work with for Assignments #1, #2 and #3. If you use the same topic for CCT109, you are not allowed to reuse work you submitted for grading in CCT109. This is important. You are encouraged to use the same source material and build on the work you have done on this topic, but do not cut and paste, which constitutes a serious academic offence. Please discuss with your TA if this is unclear. You will submit the following: • A draft of a research question • An annotated bibliography including material that you hope to use in your essay (and which inform your thesis statement). You should identify a minimum of six (6) peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. The aim of this assignment is to prepare you for writing a research-based essay. Part 1: Research Question Based on your topic, design a research question that you would answer in a term paper (what will your essay seek to find out?). Remember to keep your question specific and narrow enough to be answered in a 1500 word (approx. five page) essay. See “Narrowing Your Topic and Formulating a Specific Research Question” in Blau and Burak 4th ed p. 405 (3rd ed. p. 405). This research question is a draft of the question that your thesis statement will answer in Assignment #2. Your TA will provide feedback, and you will decide how best to revise the research question for your next assignment. CCT110: Rhetoric and Media. Winter 2019. Assignment #1 Part 2: Annotated Bibliography In order to construct thesis statements (see Assignment #2), we need to conduct preliminary research in order to find articles with which our thesis will engage. You’ll need to identify a minimum of six (6) peer-reviewed, scholarly sources. For each source, please provide the following: • Article citation (using APA) • The author's thesis statement or statement of intent • Brief summary of key points made in the article • Description of how this article relates to your research question Your TA will provide feedback on your annotated bibliography (which you can also decide to revise for subsequent assignments). You may list sources you used in writing assignment #4 in CCT 109, but you might find these are not relevant, in which case you should seek out more research as you refine your research question and narrow your topic. Research question: What are the effects of first person violent video games on improving brain cognition?
In the study made by Tavarez (2012), the research claimed that video game players would have a moderate enhancement of memory compared to non-players regardless of age and gender or the type of game played. Added by Tavarez, there are extensive studies present in the internet about the different effects of video games on aggressive behavior. However, numerous articles also suggest that there are other factors present other than video games that affect aggressive behavior. On the other hand, there are also numerous articles that claim some significant difference on cognitive abilities of those playing video games and those who do not. In the study, Tavarez used a meta-analysis of eight different published articles to support the claims. Using Cohen's d, the results indicates a moderate positive enhancement of video game players memory capacity. The study made by Tavarez () shows some evidence the most likely promote memory improvement. The study answers the second part of the research question about the improvement of memory by playing video games, but the study did not state what kind of games that may further enhance the memory of its player.
In the study made by Steenbergen et al. (2015), stated that action video game players outperform those who are non-video game players in terms of cognitive control. Also the study suggest an improvement the updating the working memory of video game players. Action video games like the first person shooting games (e.g. Halo and Call of Duty) enhance cognitive performance of the brain and helps prevent its decline. Added by Steenbergen et al. (2015), the video game players develop different control strategies to cope at fast moving scenes, thus, improving attention and reaction time. The study's findings suggest that playing action video games can be used to assess an efficient cognitive control. The study specifies the type of games that can be played to improve cognitive performance.
According to Clemenson and Stark (2015), the training of video game players will show improvement in the hippocampus related memory processes in a 3D rich virtual environment, but not a 2D video game. The study differentiated two games: Super Mario 3D world and Angry Birds, a 2D game. The results show a positive correlation of increased hippocampus related cognition in 3D Super Mario.
