Reflection on a Cultural Experience
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, cultural and creative sectors were hit the most by the crisis. Venue-based sectors such as museums, performing arts, live music, festivals, cinema, and live games were hit the most in response to the social distance measures enacted to curb the spread of the COVID-19 (Moon, 2020). Besides, the imposition of lockdowns saw movements curtailed, making it challenging to host visual cultural activities.
Over the Christmas holidays, I had the opportunity to attend a theatre festival at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). The festivities occurred in Lansing, Michigan, at the Michigan State University campus. I had received an invitation from a close friend of mine who happened to be part of the event's organizers. The days' experiences were good, and I learned quite a lot that I can reflect on.
The auditorium was gigantic, and as I kept watching performances by various bands, I desired to be on the stage myself. As Ryan's finalists actors took the stage, I stood there amazed as that was among my favorite dreams. Acting always has various variables accompanying it, and usually, it is hard to compare it with someone's work since it is an art. It came to my notice that the actors were meticulous in their movements and how they worked out their scenes. The flexibility in their act left me with no doubt but to be assured that they have been practicing for a while.
One of the most extraordinary things that I noticed in the festive competition was the brilliance of the participants. Their expressions were authentic, and they matched with the music rhythm of the theatre. The whole sound system in the theatre was well distributed, with speakers placed at every corner of the theatre. Besides, broadcasting screens were uniformly distributed throughout the theatre to improve vision. Since sparsely distributed across the theatre, these screens have helped a lot as part of WHO COVID-19 recommendations. The event was specifically designed to take place after 8 pm when there is little commotion and movement in the town for aurality reasons. The oral and sound system could be heard clearly and distinctly during the quiet night. However, no sound speakers were placed outside the theatre, fearing that it might attract a crowd that could all not be accommodated in the theatre space. Therefore, the sound system was incredible and maintained within the aurality in the theatre. Although clapping and some cheers could be heard, they were limited because of social distancing, and closeness to peers was absent. Inside the theatre, the tiny vibrations...
