A Short Narration of Art Image

Many of us are not accustomed to "reading," interpreting, or writing critically and creatively about art, particularly visual art. We are sometimes told, implicitly or explicitly, that visual art is too specialized, abstract, or elite to be readily consumed or appreciated or challenged--unlike, say, popular music, TV, or movies. This assignment asks you to move away from those perspectives on visual art.

Look back through images of the work. Imagine you walk into a large warehouse-like museum space and encounter the work in person, without knowing the title, the artist, or much of anything about it.
Write a short narrative or free-form, poetic meditation on what you see. Let your writing flow in whatever directions you like: it might be stream-of-consciousness; it might be associative, just naming or listing some of what the image encourages you to think about; it might “take flight” from the image to imagine other scenes or stories or images; it might be about your, your life, or people you know--really anything the work brings to mind for you. You don't need to describe or explain the work--this is not a review or an academic response paper--just let your writing go and see what opens up for you.
If you get stuck, you might try one of the following:
* Write in second person--i.e., use "You..." throughout the piece.
* Make a list. It might be another Hermit Crab Exercise, like a grocery or to-do list, or just a list of images and associations.
* Try a different Hermit Crab Exercise: write a series of haikus, or a letter to a friend, or a series of tweets.
* Make up a story, with elements of the work as "characters" in the story, or perhaps with imagined characters witnessing the work and reacting to it in dialogue with one another.
Your writing should be approximately 400-600 words, but it might be shorter or longer depending on the form and style you choose.
