Chapter 4: “Verbal Communication”
The most significant thing I took away from the topic of verbal language is how language has the power to reflect attitudes. The chapter defines relational messages as those that convey how one views their relationship with the other in terms of connection and power (Hamilton et al., 2019). Although I communicate with different people differently depending on how close we are, I have never taken time to think about how my messages convey how I feel about my relationship with them. In essence, I have learned that other than providing information, my verbal messages tell the other party how I perceive my connection with them. Now I wonder whether I gather other people’s level of connection when they communicate with me!
