Merits and Demerits of Technology Use among Children
Scott Stueber’s “The Positive and Negative Effects of Technology on Children” depicts how children’s use of technological devices has merits and demerits. Today, technology is an integral part of individuals’ daily lives. Many young people have electronic mobile devices, such as tablets or smartphones, which they use at home and when going to restaurants and other social places.
Based on a 2017 report by Common Sense Media, 42% of children had tablets in 2017 compared to 7% in 2013 and below 1% in 2011. In 2017, young people were found to use electronic gadgets for 48 minutes daily as opposed to 15 minutes in 2013, and 5 minutes in 2011 (Stueber, 2019). Specifically, the use of technology by young individuals is beneficial since it enhances learning, facilitates the development of future technological leaders, and promotes effective problem-solving skills. On the contrary, the disadvantages of technology use among children include diminishing social skills and relationships, altering the quality of sleep, and stimulating numerous health problems.
Stueber asserts that technology decreases the quality of children’s sleep, which I tend to disagree with. Any activity, if not controlled can ruin the sleeping patterns of young people.
