Assistive technology (AT) is a supplemental resource that may be a mandated requirement for many students with disabilities within their IEPs. In a typical resource room, there are a variety of AT devices that may be incorporated into instruction by the special education teacher.
Research two low tech, two high tech, two augmentative, and two alternative assistive technology devices appropriate for students with previously identified mild to moderate language disabilities.
For each assistive technology device researched, complete the “Assistive Technology Device Matrix Template.”
Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using documentation guidelines, which can be found in the Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Assistive technology refers to the product system or equipment either acquired commercially or customized with functions to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Schools or teachers need to be exposed to this kind of assistive device to enhance students’ learning capabilities with different disabilities (Alnahdi, 2014). There are different types of these devices, including high tech and low-tech devices and alternative and argumentative assistive technology devices.
High tech assistive technologies are assistive devices that are complex and have digital and electronic or computerized components; they include interactive smartboards due to their sensitive touch. For example, smartboards are best for students with autism as they improve their communication skills through class collaborations (Lynch, 2016). The other example is the Text-to-Speech devices that turn typed words into audio, and it’s best for students with visual impairment (Tadmin, n.d). The main disadvantages of high-tech gadgets are that they are expensive and time-consuming due to their complexity and the large databases required.
Low-tech assistive technology devices are those that are not complex and do not require any training to operate. These include pencil grips that can be used for students with dysgraphia as they facilitate proper and functional handling of a pencil, thus improving their handwriting (Tadmin, n.d). The other low-tech device is the communication board, which eases communication by developing communication systems for students, especially those with speech problems. Low-tech devices are not expensive, but no adjustments can be made to the devices.
