Rural areas in developing countries are frequently deprived of access to information and communications technologies (ICTs), making them illiterate in technology advances. The lack of information becomes detrimental as this becomes the basis of competency, especially when rural community dwellers transfer to urban areas, where its use is rampant. ICT should be applied in agriculture as this will help the rural farmers improve their approaches to farming and trading of crops, making them more competitive (Chhachhar et al., 2013).
Both ICTs utilize the internet to widen the scope of information gathering and dissemination. The first use of ICT is to ensure that the farmers’ crops will survive in various seasons. In rural areas where traditional farming techniques are used, they are often devastated by natural calamities, such as typhoons or drought, which can destroy their crops. ICT can help the farmers prepare by installing a weather forecast system on their mobile phones, using the network with the strongest signal. In this way, they can prematurely harvest their crops and sell them for a reasonable price rather than waste them (Kumar et al., 2020).
Second, applications can be developed to trade their goods instead of being sold to companies at a lower price. This will help them gain direct access to consumers, and they will become the primary suppliers (Mathur, 2018).
ICTs can help farmers reduce the competency gap between rural and urban areas due to their advantages, including weather forecasts and online trading. These strategies, although minimal, provide access to previously deprived resources.
