Your final paper will examine one event, practice, or text that allows you to explore advertising’s social significance. Your paper must include the following sections: Introduction: What is the event, practice, or text? History: What historical practices or conditions came before your chosen event, practice, or text that are similar to, or relevant to, it? What’s the connection? Political economy: How is/was money exchanged in relation to the event, practice, or text? What kinds of incentives are created by this configuration of payment? Cultural meaning: What cultural or ideological meanings does the event, practice, or text signify, promote, or take for granted? Conclusion: What does this event, practice, or text suggest about the social significance of advertising in our everyday lives? Why does it matter? Your final paper must apply at least one (1) major concept or idea from course readings in each section other than the introduction, explaining each concept in your own words and analyzing how it is related to the event, practice, or text. This means your final paper should contain at least four (4) concepts from the course readings; for full credit, you should choose the most relevant ideas from the course and explain why each idea is relevant. Formatting checklist for all final papers: o Include a title page that lists your name, the title of the paper, and whether you want to receive written feedback from the grading team. o Use Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on top, bottom, and both sides; number your pages. o Include in-text citations and a Works Cited/References page. If you are using someone else’s ideas, cite them by name. If you are using their actual words, use quotation marks and include the page number upon which the quoted text appears in the reading. o Works Cited, title, and name don’t count toward your word count.
