Week 1 CCC: Part 1 Template

1A. “I Can’t” List

Challenge 1: I can’t communicate properly with my workmates because they seem to avoid me.

Description 1: Unless it’s a very important and urgent matter, I can’t seem to communicate with my workmates well. They avoid me most of the time that I can’t even approach them in regards to simple matters. My expression gives off negative vibes that put them off. They only respond to me whenever I approach them first with matters that need to be discussed. We have a healthy working environment and maintains professional relationships with each other. But there’s just something different with my way of approach.

Last Monday, I have some concerns about our weekly report. I tried asking one of my workmates about it. She seems to be hesitant about approaching me so she sent me the needed files through an email. In another instance, I approached one of our colleagues about our on-going project. She answered me directly and objectively, then she left after addressing my concerns, without any side conversations.

Challenge 2: I can’t talk to my friends while looking directly at their eyes because they think that I’m glaring at them.

Description 2: My friends are already used for my facial expression. Whenever I talk to them, they just avoid my gaze and laugh it out. Most of the time, they also tell me to change my facial expressions so other people won’t misunderstand me. I try to talk to them while looking at their eyes and they tell me that it seems like I’m glaring at them.

My friends and I had a reunion last time. One of my friends whom I haven’t seen for a long time thought that I was mad at her with the way I looked at her. I tried to explain my part to avoid further misinterpretation.

Challenge 3: I can’t join any hangouts after a long day at work.

Description 3: My other workmates would often go for drinks after a long at work. With my negative facial expression, I don’t get many invites. I can’t join them whenever they invite me because they might think that I was forced to hang out with the way how I express my emotion.

During Fridays, it has been a routine for our team to go out for drinks. One of my colleagues tried to invite me but was hesitant to approach me because he thought that I was in a bad mood. I told him that it’s just the way I look but declined the offer anyway. I don’t want to be further misread.

Challenge 4: I can’t manage to get people’s attention in a friendly manner because they seem to assume that I’m in a bad mood.

Description 4: People at my workplace tend to assume that I’m not approachable. To avoid any arguments, they would hurriedly avoid my gaze. They would feel nervous whenever I try to call out their attention. They would misread my facial expression that would often result in myself being isolated.

Whenever we have met, my other workmates tend to avoid my attention. When I call out their names for some clarifications, they would think twice first before approaching me.

1B. “I Won’t” List

Challenge 1: I won’t join any hangouts after a long day at work.

Explanation 1: This is more appropriate with “I won’t” statement since it’s my decision to not join them because of how they perceived my attitude.

Narrative 1: During events, I tend to decline any invitations since I am often misread by my workmates. It’s my own decision not to join any hangouts. I won’t socialize much since I’m already used to the feeling of being avoided.

1C. “Don’t Know” List

Challenge 1: I don’t know how to get people’s attention in a friendly manner because they seem to assume that I’m in a bad mood.

Narrative 1: It’s easy to get people’s attention for some. But I find it difficult due to my poor communication skills along with the negative connotation of my facial expression. Additionally, I am not aware most of the time how my emotions are expressed in my face since I’ve grown accustomed to it.

1D. Issue Selection

After eliminating, I chose the issue of not knowing how to get people’s attention in a friendly manner. Considering many factors, this has been the main issue in my communication skills that has hindered me to properly communicate with my other workmates. I often have difficulties in changing my facial expression so that I can have a friendly approach towards my colleagues.

1E. Project Statement

This will focus on the modification of communication behavior in regards to getting the attention of people in the workplace by changing the approach employing facial expressions. Displaying a positive facial expression will be practiced to to have a more successful relationship among the colleagues in the workplace.

Goal
The goal is modifying communication behaviour by displaying positive facial expression to create a more fruitful relationship with my colleagues.
Monday
The conversation was with my supervisor in his office. It was about specific reports that I had submitted the previous week. The conversation happened early in the morning when I arrived at work. He was concerned that I had not followed the original format that was required for that particular report. He started the conversation and focused more on directing me on what I should have done. Throughout the interview, I maintained a straight face, avoided eye contact and only gave affirmative answers. He concluded by saying that he was not reprimanding me but instead of directing.
Tuesday
The conversation here was with the security guard. It occurred during lunch hour at the main entrance. He was enquiring why I didn't have my gate pass but instead followed a colleague’s lead. The conversation was quite awkward because I didn't see it as an issue. I was surprised and hurriedly walked past him as I apologized without looking at him.
Wednesday
It happened after work while two of my colleagues and I went out for coffee. We talked about general issues in the office. The conversation went quite smoothly. I engaged more and was delighted that they experienced the friendly side of me. My tone was also calm, accompanied by sounds like 'uhh’.
Thursday
It was a lunchtime meeting in the office. All of us were required to give input on a new technology that was being incorporated. The meeting was in the boardroom and happened as a formality. Notably, this was a very formal setting with the bosses and investors present. I was initially nervous in my presentation and avoided eye contact but eventually got used to it.
Friday
I went out for lunch with a colleague. We talked about my past workplace. He wanted to know how I had adjusted to my new work environment. The setting was calm and friendly. I found out that I opened out more, and my facial expression was quite accommodating.
Saturday
Around 3 pm, we went for team building in a neighbouring park with colleagues. It was a general conversation about almost everything. Presumably, it happened as a way of facilitating better teamwo...
