Communication technologies have had a huge influence on American societies in different ways. For instance, the development and the increased use of technology such as cell phones have played a key role in connecting families and friends, particularly those who live away from each other. It is, however, necessary to comprehend that these communication technologies have promoted the use of social platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, which have highly influenced how individuals interact face-to-face. American families have been significantly impacted by tech-dependent society. Ideally, communication and information technologies have changed how people work and interact. The increased usage of communication technologies such as cell phones has promoted cyberbullying, depression, and poor sleep patterns among Americans.
Cyberbullying
Ideally, the rise and reliance on cell phones and other communication technologies have made it possible for individuals in America to remain in touch with their family members, close friends as well as strangers from different parts of the country and across the globe. It is, however, essential to note that there are undesirable sides of being “connected”; this is because it becomes easy for individuals reliant on telecommunication technologies to suffer or participate in cyberbullying. Communication technologies such as cell phones have facilitated e-communication and establishing contact in the absence of physical interaction (Carter, 2013). The use of cell phones, smartphones, and the Internet has made it possible for people to participate in vicious harassment activities by posting anonymous posts which may be read by numerous individuals from other parts of the country and across the world.
The use of social media platforms has increased over the past few years, and it is estimated that over eighty percent of teenagers in the United States have access to different types of social media (Garett, Lord, & Young, 2016). Additionally, these social media offer different sets of functionalities, and they also support selective information sharing, and this makes it possible for people to gain access to private information, which may be used in leveraging against other individuals. The prevalence of cyberbullying is attributed to other medical issues such as mental and behavioral conditions, and it can also promote suicidal thoughts. The aspect of cyberbullying, which makes it challenging to deal with, is that it might be challenging to identify the perpetrators because they always make themselves anonymous. Researchers have suggested that perpetrators and victims of cyberbullying are more likely to experience long-lasting psychological effects. The victims may develop agoraphobia ( fear to stay in public places ) and may also develop panic disorder.
Depression
Cell phones make it possible for people to access the internet and use other social networking sites such as Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook has dramatically changed how people in American societies interact with each other.
