Animal Physiology: Cell-Cell Junctions
Coursework Instructions:
2. Name each of the anchoring junctions for cell-cell and cell-ECM connections and how they are similar and different.
3. If you were to inhibit the SOS protein, what would happen to an enzyme receptor signaling pathway that utilizes it? How would the cellular response be affected?
4. What are the two properties of the voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels that are responsible for repolarization of the membrane after an action potential?

Cell-cell junctions
Adesmosomes and adherens junctions are the anchoring junctions for cell-cell. Desmosomes use cadherin glucoproteins (intermediate filaments) to connect to the cytoplasm. Adherens Junctions are belt adhesion and prevents tissues from separating as they stretch and contract. Both the desmosomes and adherens junctions link the cytoskeletons of adjacent cells, but the desmosomes links the filaments between the adjacent cells and hemidesmosomes
Cell-ECM (extracellular matrix) connections
Focal adhesions and the hemidesmosomes are the anchoring junctionsfor cell-ECM connections. Focal adhesions are the nonepithelial cells with integrin-containing aggregates, while the hemidesmosomes are the integrin-containing anchoring junctions, which attach cells to elements of the extracellular matrix.
