Human Physiology Signaling Project - Autobiography of G Proteins Your name Subject and Section Professor’s Name November 3, 2019 Transmission of information is an important process both in the macro and micro worlds. While it is important for living organisms to communicate and aggregate into groups in the macro level, this process is also important for cells to function together to achieve their collective goals. Although there are a variety of ways for cells to communicate with one another, I (G protein) am considered as one of the most important messengers inside the body. I am responsible for a variety of functions, which includes transmissions of information between cellular spaces, among others. In the succeeding sections, I would discuss my own life story within the context of the human biome. My Composition Although I am most commonly known as G Protein, others call me as Guanine nucleotide-binding protein. I am a protein type molecule whose main function is to bind and hydrolyze the molecules Guanosine triphosphate (GDP) to his younger brother Guanosine Diphosphate (GDP) CITATION Nar16 \l 1033 (Narla, et al., 2016). My everyday work happens in two places, namely (1) extracellular and (2) intracellular. On the one hand, processes that happen in the extracellular space starts when other signaling molecules bind to the other versions of me (GPCRs) who are stationed at the cell membrane. In this first stage, scientists call me as a ‘receptor’. Subsequently, as these molecules bind to me while I wait in the cell membrane, they also pass information that the GPCRs at the Intracellular space. A process whereby I act as a ‘transducer’. Lastly, the latter would transmit the information to myself in my capacity as a Heterotrimeric G Protein, which is also the reason why I am referred to as an ‘amplifier’ in this particular stage CITATION Mil06 \l 1033 (Milligan & Kostenis, 2006). All in all, my daily job is to function as a messenger by acting as three different proteins that convey information coming from the extracellular to the intracellular space. My Discovery Although I have been living in the human body (and in other organisms) for millennia, humans have only discovered my existence in 1994. Particularly, it was two scientists named Martin Rodbell and Alfred Gilman who was able to identify my function as a signaling molecule as they experimented on a rat’s cell. During their experiment, the two used a technique to isolate a rat’s cell and tissue and obser...
