Tariff War between US and China and its Impact on Google and Tencent

There are many options for which data sources you use.  We have discussed in class sources of data for climate change governance (http://visuals.datadrivenlab.org/climateaction/), and other students have brought up trade indices and so forth pertinent to the course material.  You can use any of these alone, in combination with the EPS China database, or just the EPS China database. There are no limits for where you source quantitative data. These are just suggestions. The EPS China Data  (Links to an external site.)database is a great place to start because it's one of the most advanced databases on Chinese statistics of its kind. I provide here instructions on how to use it,  please read. FYI: Many students are living off-campus which requires a VPN to access. There are two methods for getting this access:

Method 1: WebVPN

1) Go to: https://vpn.nacs.uci.edu/+CSCOE+/logon.html#form_title_textLinks to an external site.

2) In the "GROUP" drop-down menu, select "WebVPN"

3) enter your UCI net ID and password to log into the VPN

4) at the top of the VPN page, in the field next to "http://" enter: "www.epschinadata.com", then click "Enter the Databases"

Method 2: Software VPN

1. Use the software VPN from UCI, connect to vpn.uci.eduLinks to an external site. and choose "UCIFull" when a window prompts. 

2. After logging in, google "UCI library research guide", click on the first result. (https://guides.lib.uci.edu/asian_studies/ChineseLinks to an external site.)

3. Under tab "Guides by Subject", choose "Asian Studies" under Humanities

4. Click on "Find Source By Language" and click on "Chinese Books, Articles"

5. Find the tab "Reference Materials" and "EPS China Data" under Statistics

6. Click on the link and Voila.

The EPS China database is a state-of-the-art database that allows for instant collection, aggregation, visualization and even simple statistical analysis of a wide range of socioeconomic statistical data on China. 

On the opening page of EPS China Data (Links to an external site.), click "Enter the databases" on the top-right corner of the page. This will bring you to the data interface. On the left-side of the screen, a vertical list of data sources will appear. By default, "China Macro Economy Database" will be expanded, but you can minimize it by simply clicking the minis (-) symbol next to it.

Of note, a statistical analysis is not required for this project. What is required, however, is a thoughtful look at data you think is interesting, an explanation of what you think it tells us about the current domestic and/or international situation of China, and that of its future. Connect it to some topic discussed in class. What does the data say about economic interdependence with other countries? What other countries is China investing in, where does most of China's foreign investment come from, and what does this mean for its relationship with those countries? How much is China polluting, how much coal is being used, and what does this say for climate governance? Text analysis of no less than 1,000 words is required, and visualizations are also required. There's no particular limit to the number of visualizations you can include. There are also no specific topics you are required to tackle, but you can receive full credit if you meet the above guidelines 

Access to the EPS database is afforded  to five UC campuses: Irvine, Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, and Davis. If you are not from one of these campuses, we encourage you to so see if you have access to the database via your library—if not, an alternative Final Project can be undertaken by the student. 

Lastly, you are not restricted to any range of particular topics, and there are a LOT of potential statistical areas you could choose from. However, it is quite possible that there will be overlap. I will be reading all of the final papers, and it is very easy to find two or more papers that repeat exactly the same content, in which case all parties concerned would receive a zero. That does not mean two or more students cannot use the same variables/statistical areas--it's perfectly fine if you do. However, in order to avoid two students accidentally writing the same content about the same topic, please announce over Yellowdig your chosen topic(s). This way, at least others are aware.
