Things to Consider Before Conducting a Business Outside the United States

Essay Instructions:

This week we are learning about the Global Economy. As you have learned in the previous modules and possibly other classes, our world (from a supply chain/production/logistics standpoint) is small. We can now get things from all over the world in a relative short period of time with the right connections, timing, money, and resources. The majority of the companies in Indiana will tell you that they have some part of the operations either located or conduct some kind of business outside of the United States.
Thinking about conducting business outside of the United States. Think about things that are different in other countries compared to the United States. In your initial post, discuss the top 5 things you need to know, be aware, or sensitive to when conducting business globally? Before you send that email, make that phone call, or type that invoice, what are those things that would help you either write that note, the timing of the correspondence, or the words/phrases you use to communicate?

First, other countries across the globe advocate for a mandatory paid vacation for employees, contrary to US law, which does not provide paid leave to workers. The European Union labor laws provide employees with four weeks paid vacation inclusive of sick leaves, maternity leaves, and other paid leaves stipulated by the European law. Various countries across the globe have flexible working hours, and the part-time payments are similar to full-time payments in similar jobs. Conducting business outside the United States requires adequate knowledge of various nations’ working hours.
Third, Wi-Fi availability and accessibility in multiple nations across the globe is better compared to the United States. Internet access in America is considered private, and people pay considerable amounts to monopolistic companies to facilitate internet accessibility. Also, Wi-Fi services in America are slower despite being expensive. On the flip side, Wi-Fi accesses are faster and cheap in various nations across the globe. For instance, people can walk long distances and still freely access internet connections in Estonia, increasing their access to information, banking activities, and other operations (Schwartz, 2015). Fourth, business ethics vary among various nations across the globe. Businesses operating worldwide might encounter standards different from their own in both positive and negative perspectives (SCHMITT, 2020). Lastly, multiple countries across the globe have an extended parental leave that enables expectant employees to remain home with their kids. For instance, Vietnam offers a six-month fully paid leave to such workers. On the flip side, Estonia and Spain grant pregnant employees three years of unpaid leave.
