The debate on whether smoking should be banned or not has been controversial and its controversies are yet to fade away anytime soon. However, numerous researches reveal that addiction to smoking can end up being very harmful to the users if not everybody and should therefore be banned (Marcovitz, 2012). To begin with, smoking develops cancer and this is attributed to the numerous toxic chemical that are available in cigarette, particularly nicotine which a very addictive additive that is found in cigarettes. Many deaths from lung cancer and other heart related diseases that occur on annual basis have been associated with smocking. For instance, studies reveal that more Americans die from the harmful effects of cigarettes than even alcohol, suicide, AIDS, car accidents, homicide or even illegal drugs combined (Marcovitz, 2012).
Secondly, smoking has been found harmful to the second parties, whereby people around smokers- the second hand smoking tend to inhale the smoke particularly from those individuals who are not smoking in designated areas (Marcovitz, 2012). As a result both smokers and non-smokers end up being affected. In order to curb this trend, most authorities are called upon to adhere to strict smoking zones (Marcovitz, 2012).
