Scientists consent to the fact that smoking is unhealthy. Tobacco can cause cancer, pneumonia, bronchitis and heart-related diseases. Smoking will not just hurt the smoker, but the non-smoker (passive smoker) also. Banning of the habit would encourage decreased smoking levels and eventual quitting in some cases; smoking will, therefore, cease to be a social activity and the general public health would improve. Most governments incur the cost of treating smoking-related complications, meaning that the government has a reason to discourage the habit.
The world would be a much serene place without smoking. A significant fraction of the population dies from cancer and heart diseases that are majorly caused by smoking. There’s a societal acceptance that adults can determine their wellbeing and even decide to harm themselves so long as other members of the society are not harmed; this may not be the case for passive smokers. Active smokers choose to smoke; the same cannot be said of passive smokers. With the widespread network of smokers, cigarette manufacturers have continued to reap enormous revenue from this ever-growing market (Marcovitz, 2013). Chances are that the revenue may double or triple if associated excise tax and ban on smoking in public places are lifted. Not smoking would save lives, time, money and even the environment. Smoking impacts the population negatively in million ways. Tobacco affects the smoker’s health and even poses control to their time and smoking habit.
