Should the hospitality industry end the practice of tipping?”
Tipping, practiced all over the world, assumes a distinctive role in the hospitality industry. There is a lot of debate regarding whether the trend of tipping should be ended or not. These days, almost all hotel and restaurant owners tend to pay poor salaries to their workers, urging them not to ask for a tip from the customer. While tipping motivates them to work hard, tip or no tip did not show up any difference, tips lower their wage with no benefit, and tipping reflects racial inequality. Therefore the custom of tipping should come to an end.
There are three reasons why we should ban tipping in the hospitality industry. The first reason is regardless customers tip or not, they are still getting the same service. Tipping should be eliminated as soon as possible as it will affect the quality of service or customer satisfaction. According to Zagorsky (2018), tips negatively ruin the work ethics among waiters and largely affects the hospitality industry. Scholars who have investigated the issue of tipping especially in Helmore (2017) says that restaurants are changing the tipping culture and moving towards a policy that emphasizes on hospitality-included menus. North America agrees that this culture creates problems than solving any specific one. While tipping has persisted as a cultural norm, there is no profound correlation between the service quality and the amounts of tips given to the servers.
The second reason is when servants receive tips, their basic wage is reduced. So their whole benefit is not improved. Zagorsky (2018) argues that tipping creates instability in the earnings of employees and leads to poor service delivery. During the short term tips make you gain money but for the long term no-tipping will be better in future. For example, the minimum wage is 12.50 per hour in United State. But the most of restaurant actually pay server $3.33 per hour. By law, this situation show that no matter how much money you receive, you only can get the minimum wage which means employers only have to recover that amount if the staff did not get enough tips to make the minimum wage (Zhou, 2018, para. 3). That is why Dunn (2018) suggests that the money given as tips could instead be used to provide a number of benefits to the attendants, including health insurance, retiremen...
