Introduction
The duration of a task comprises the time required to finish a project and fulfill its objectives. The duration of a task might be measured in days, months, or even years. In contrast, direct resource costs can be proportionally attributed to a specific project or program (Klastorin & Mitchell, 2020). Direct expenses include raw materials, labor, salary, equipment, and other incidentals. In addition, there is a correlation between time and the direct cost of an action. Typically, adding extra personnel to a particular task will shorten its duration. However, the pace of progress may lead to increased costs and decreased quality. Therefore, this section will examine the implications of activities' time-versus-cost tradeoffs and the probable boundaries of such decisions.
Relationship between task duration and direct resource cost
The primary aim of a project manager is to finish and deliver the project as early as possible. In line with that, the shorter the project's duration, the more costly the task becomes. Additionally, one must diverge extra resources such as raw materials and labor to achieve maximum output, increasing the total project's spending. However, it is not imminent that there exists a linear relationship between the task duration and the project costs due to qualitative factors such as motivation, communication, and management. Nevertheless, in most scenarios, task duration often reduces with an increase in direct costs. For instance, project crashing reduces a project's time by diverging resources that are more straightforward to a project activity (Klastorin & Mitchell, 2020). Per the triple constraint, the costs must increase if you lower the project's duration or time. There is a tradeoff. Crashing project management accommodates the triple constraint by including more resources or reducing the project's needs or scope to meet the goal. However, management can only undertake such harsh steps with the sponsor's support or the significant stakeholders. For example, Company A has a task duration of four weeks to deliver specific software to the primary stakeholders. However, the project manager anticipates that the project duration might take longer than expected. Thus, to avoid such emancipations, the project managers hire three software developers and acquire three laptop devices for the new employees. The effect would be a reduced task duration due to an increase in workforce and resources. ...
