In the past two decades, major developments in new office technology have greatly changed the office environment and its operations. One of the biggest developments under review is computerized job monitoring; this enables employers to continuously or intermittently monitor employees at a level previously unattainable in real-time with or without the employee’s knowledge or permission (Fusi & Feeney, 2018). The increased use of electronic devices in offices has also facilitated the monitoring of employees by employers. Like many other technological products and services, office monitoring has its benefits and limitations in its use.
Carpenter et al. (2020) argue that, with the adoption of monitoring technologies in office settings, several problems that were a headache to employers in the past decades have been solved. In their use, there has been a significant reduction in the waste of organizational resources and theft. The monitoring capabilities have also made it possible to distribute available workloads to other groups that may be idle or have fewer tasks. Other benefits of the technology have been associated with adherence to safety protocols, significantly reduced incidences of employees wasting company time, and increased productivity at the workplace. Employees are more productive and efficiently utilize organizational resources when they know they are being monitored (Carpenter et al., 2020). Therefore, this has led to increased efficiency and improved operations, which positively impacts the organization’s performance. Monitoring employees has also provided employers with critical information on various areas that require improvement to achieve increased productivity. Tracking employee performance has also been possible through the monitoring technology where employers evaluate the tasks done based on the time provided (Kehinde, & Okafor, 2019).
