Leaders have the responsibility of spearheading various departments that they head into achieving the set objectives. This means that they have to join hands with them and put their efforts together in order to achieve. It is for this reason that they develop a way of interacting with their teams, motivating their teams, and empowering them. This is important because empowerment improves commitment, productivity, and satisfaction. It makes them feel productive and influential, both of which boost their desire to commit themselves to a more significant course.
During the holidays, I volunteered to work in a shopping mall. The mall was extensive, with a variety of fully stocked commodities of sale. The mall has been operational for the last thirteen years and is a big private venture in the countryside. It occupies a floor area of about 20,000M2. It also has two directors and a large employee base of about fifty employees. Also, three feeder trucks restock the store at regular intervals. The mall is one big spacious building, although it is subdivided into subsections. The subdivision has helped the management manage and observe how customers are being served. It has put the management close to the customer, enabling it to get first-hand information about the nature of services offered and possible adjustments. A manager can easily monitor the behavior of a sales assistant and even establish a rapport enabling the two to share openly on the challenges both parties face in the place of work.
Sales attendants have been grouped into groups of ten, and each group assigned a manager. The manager is responsible for the performance of the members of the group. This gives them commitment and helps them focus on their duties. Also, after every trading period (six months), the mall names the employee of the season and the best performing group among the ten. That is a strategy aiming at keeping all the employees at optimum operational capacity. Every employee understands the need for cooperation in teamwork in order to win the award for the best group. It instills teamwork and also self-discipline. In so doing, the organization continues becoming better and better in its service delivery. The rewards given at the end of trading seasons motivates the employees to keep putting extra commitment and effort. It improves their productivity and the success of the leaders and the whole organization.
