On the job training, commonly known as OJT, is the training administered to inexperienced employees during the initial days of employment while they do the actual job. This training is usually conducted by a professional trainer or an experienced employee using hands-on training. This training may be supported by classroom training and in that case, that is considered off job training. This kind of training enables the employee to acquire the necessary skills needed for a particular job while doing the job since they get feedback, advice and suggestions from co-workers and the trainer. (Blanchard & Thacker 2013)
This paper is going to look at the possible cost implications of the lack OJT training, best environment for the training, best trainer and whether purchasing a training program for backhoe operators is necessary. Also the paper will focus on what training would be recommended between OJT and classroom training.
Most employees, when trained according to the industry standards, will contribute to the success of the company. But on the other hand, if the employee is not trained and is not equipped with the necessary skills then they may not produce the output that is expected of them. This then results into cost implications to the company since there will be low productivity. Untrained workers will spent a lot of time trying to seek assistance from their co-workers hence wasting lots of time that could have been used to complete production. Also such workers may need a lot of supervision from supervisors thus destructing them from doing other duties.Untrained workers are more prone to injuries according to The Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Injuries to workers will cost the industry medical money that was not planned for. This will increase the levels of expenses for the company. Also untrained employees will lead to low quality production and poor customer care which will definitely lead to the loss of customers. ( Mincer, 1962).
The companies which do not train their employees mostly consider in-depth training an unnecessary expense that will consume the company’s finances and time for no reason. They expect new employees to learn from their co-workers and supervisors without necessarily being trained. In most cases this type of experience leaves the employees with inadequate skills and this will after sometime bring problems to the company.
