Leadership is defined as the ability of an individual to guide or influence members of a group of followers. In the business realm, people who exhibit key leadership qualities such as vision, aspiration, critical thinking, among others, easily ascend to top management positions such as head of departments, CEOs, presidents, among other senior positions. However, while serving at these positions or even in teams, these leaders adopt different leadership styles, ranging from autocratic leadership style to democratic style to laissez-faire style.
Leadership Styles: Authoritarian, democratic, and Laissez-faire
Key leadership styles adopted by most leaders today are democratic, authoritarian style, and laissez-faire. The autocratic leadership style is best summarized by the phrase, "do as I say." Autocratic leaders are the sole decision-makers and rarely seek followers' opinions. Democratic leaders play an active role in an organization and rarely force things. Such leaders seek followers' opinions before arriving at a decision. Finally, the laissez-fair leadership style is the least engaging and assumes everyone knows what is being done (Fiaz, Su, & Saqib, 2017).
