Information Systems refers to an academic study of systems with a particular reference to information and the complementary networks of hardware and software that individuals and institutions use to create, filter, process, collect and distribute useful data. Information systems are also socio-technical, organizational, and formal systems used to store and distribute information in the organization. Information systems provide the users with appropriate information that is required and needed to do any work efficiently and effectively. Information systems are adaptable in that they can be reprogrammed and are flexible. The system can be updated and re-installed without affecting the organization or institution.
Components of Information Systems
The information system has got five components. These five components include human resources and procedures, computer software, database and warehouses, computer hardware, and telecommunication. The computer software involves the application programs or programs used to manage, coordinate, and control the hardware components, as noted by the Bourgeois (n.d). The computer software contains information, data, or instructions that direct the computer what to do. The application programs or programs can also be used to process information. The computer software can be divided into three parts, namely system software, application software, and procedures. The system software contains the program that runs the application programs and computer hardware. The application software entails the programs or groups of programs that are meant for the user. Computer software procedures are coded instructions that direct the computer on how to do a calculation or run a program.
Computer hardware is the physical part of a computer. The physical part consists of output and input devices, processors, operating systems, and media devices.
