Re:Topic 7 DQ
The transformational leader's focus is the organization, and their behavior builds follower commitment for the objectives of the organization. The servant leader's focus is their followers, with the organizational goals playing a secondary role (Stone, Russell, & Patterson, 2003). This is the distinguishing characteristic between the two models, as far as I can see.
There exists a good argument for either, since both share so many similar behaviors between them, like integrity, transparency, honesty, and building of relationship. Transformational leaders have the goal of sharing a mutual meaning and purpose in their work with their followers. The promote teamwork and self-esteem, empowering staff to engage and become leaders in their own practice, using optimism and inspiration (Smith, 2011). They are effective communicators who actively listen to their stakeholders concerns and ideas. This trust building creates the foundation from which change and progress can occur. This fosters respect and ongoing collaboration, used to reach the organizational goals.
I think transformational leadership as the more practical, efficient and accessible leadership model. Although I strive to be a servant leader, believe in and value the model and it's goals, I see it as a model that takes significantly more time to show it's rewards, which is often a luxury, and the individuals to implement it with any sincerity, are fewer and further between. Transformational leadership seems to be a servant leadership “lite” to me; a transitory stepping stone, like John the Baptist was for Jesus, that prepares the way for the ultimate form of leadership.

Servant leaders manage organization dynamics and lead change to ensure that the continued success of the stakeholders will be served in the case that they share their authority by embracing the needs of other people (Smith, 2011). For instance, a servant leader would want to avail the necessary resources that will help their followers. Such a statement sheds more light on the dynamics of servant leaders who focus on the behavior of their members while building their commitment to the workplace.
Importantly, servant leadership focuses more on serving others with an in built commitment to leading followers. As such, there is a need to highlight that servant leadership tends to be effective in terms of encouraging followers to engage actively in productive work ethics and the general good of their services (Stone, Russell & Patterson, 2003).
